A real scene from a story

Press play

Hear a real page,
read aloud.

Unedited, from the app. “Mia” is the name that was typed in.

Page 1 of 9 · Magic QuestAge 7 · ShortRead by Celeste

Our story engine wrote it, and a computer voice reads it. Behind it: a real scene from this story’s world.

How it works

Four easy questions. Then one big button.

  1. Who is this story for?

    Their first name and age.

The app’s first step, Who is this story for?, with a name box and big age buttons from 6 to 11
  2. What kind of story?

Magic, space, mysteries, Sleepy Time and more.

The What kind of story? screen with big picture tiles; Magic Quest is marked Movie scenes
  3. Who should read it aloud?

8 storytellers. Hear each one first.

The Who should read it aloud? screen with storyteller cards and Hear it buttons
  4. How long should it be?

Short, Medium or Long, in minutes.

The last step: a summary for Mia, age 7, and Short, Medium or Long buttons with minutes

Real app screens.

Too tired to choose? Tap “Surprise me”.

You can’t break anything. Nothing is made until you press “Make the story”.

Optional extras: questions and lessons

Questions during the story, if you like. On the last screen, open “More choices” and pick a subject under “Ask questions during the story?”: math, reading and words, science, geography, history, or questions about the story itself. Some pages then pause for a quick question matched to their age. Answers go through automatic checks, and a wrong guess gets gentle encouragement.

A little lesson, if you like. Pick one, like kindness, honesty or courage, and the story shows it through what the hero does. It never lectures.

Both stay off unless you choose them.

In select worlds

Some stories come with movie scenes.

In a few worlds, four short scenes play along, and the words match them.

Magic Quest, A castle kingdom, the opening

Ready-made scenes made with AI video tools, never pictures of your child. Rather have none? Pick another kind of story.

Which stories have movie scenes?

Magic Quest: a castle kingdom, deep underground caves, islands floating in the sky, lost jungle ruins. Secret Agent: a daring treasure heist, testing a secret gadget. Into the Wild: out on the ocean, high in the mountains, across the desert, the frozen Arctic. Race Against Time: a big chase. In the app these are marked 🎬.

Each of these stories has four short, silent scenes: on page 1, about a third of the way in, about two-thirds in, and on the last page. The storyteller’s voice carries the story. Every other kind of story has no movie scenes.

“Surprise me” can pick one of these worlds, so if you’d rather have none, choose the kind of story yourself.

For grandparents

Far away? You can still be there at bedtime.

  • On a video call

Play it on a tablet beside your phone. They hear it and still see you.

  • Reading glasses?

Four text sizes and a slower voice.

A note for the parents

No ads. No chat. Just a first name and age. Our story engine writes each story, and every page is safety-checked before it’s read aloud.

Can I save a story to keep?

Yes, on a computer or an Android phone or tablet. Listen to the whole story once, then tap “Save to this device” at the end. The saved copy keeps the storyteller’s voice on every page you played, and it’s yours to keep and share with the family. Saving on iPhone and iPad is coming soon. Until then, every finished story waits in My Stories for 30 days, on any phone, tablet or computer you sign in on.

Made for bedtime

Something on their mind tonight?

Pick Sleepy Time and tap the worry. The story takes it seriously, then settles them toward sleep.

  • Scared of the Dark
  • Monster Under the Bed
  • Too Wired to Sleep
  • Big Feelings at Bedtime
  • Sleeping Somewhere New
  • Worried About Tomorrow

Mostly, they just listen.

  • It reads itself aloud. Dim the screen and let them close their eyes.
  • When the story ends, it ends. Nothing new starts by itself.
The Sleepy Time screen: Step 2 of 4, What’s on their mind tonight?, and its six choices
Pantalla real de la app, aquí en inglés.
Isn’t this more screen time?

We won’t pretend it’s screen-free: it runs on a phone, tablet or computer. But it’s built for listening. The story reads itself aloud, page after page, so you can dim the screen, set it on the nightstand and let them close their eyes. The words are on screen too, in four text sizes, for children who like to follow along. No pictures are made for your story. Only a few worlds add short, ready-made movie scenes; pick another kind if you’d rather have none.

Honest about AI

Yes, the Spark story engine writes every story. Judge the first lines yourself.

Age 6 · Sleepy Time · Short

Here is a rule that everybody in Mia's house knew. When the hallway light clicked off, it was time for the whole world to grow quiet. Mia lay under her slate-gray quilt, the one stitched with tiny lilac stars, and watched her door stand open, just a crack. A thin gold line of light stretched across her floor like a sleepy little river. …

Age 11 · Magic Quest · Long

The cold came first — a damp, needling cold that settled into Mateo's knuckles as he gripped the oars, so different from the dry heat of his village that his fingers had gone stiff before he'd rowed a single mile. Mist curled low across the water, thick as unspun wool, and through it the floating islands rose on every side, their undersides dripping with roots that dangled into open air like fingers testing the temperature of the sky. …

First lines of page 1, as the app wrote them. Not a word changed.

How every story is made

Planned first. First, a planning step decides the heart of the story: the feeling underneath it, a small detail on page one that comes back at the end, a quiet moment, and the big moment we hope they’ll tell you about tomorrow. There’s even a line planned for the grown-up listening.

One page at a time. Every page has its own plan. Before each new page is written, the story engine looks back at how the story began and what just happened, so the characters stay themselves and the ending pays off.

For their exact age. A 6-year-old gets short, cozy pages with simple words. An 11-year-old gets a longer, deeper, chapter-book kind of story. The words per page and the length change with every year, and the vocabulary grows with them.

The worn-out stuff is left out. Each story opens in its own way. Worn-out titles and ready-made phrases are banned, and every story needs details that could only belong to it.

A lesson only if you ask. Pick a lesson, like kindness, honesty or courage, and the story shows it through what the hero does. It never lectures. Or leave it at “No particular lesson”, which is where it starts.

Checked before they hear it. Every page gets an automatic safety check before it’s read aloud. Pages that come out too short or cut off are sent back to be written again. If a story can’t be finished, the app usually gives its minutes back by itself; if it doesn’t, email us and we’ll put them back.

Safety

Is it safe? Here’s what happens with every story.

  1. The name you type is checked.

  2. Our story engine writes under strict child-safety rules.

  3. Every page is checked before it’s read aloud.

  4. Your child just listens. There’s no chat.

  • No ads
  • A grown-up sets it up
  • We never sell your information
Exactly what we check, and who sees the name

The only thing you type is a first name (plus a pet or friend if you like). It’s checked for anything unkind, scary or grown-up, and more strictly for children 8 and under.

Our story engine follows strict child-safety rules that come before everything else.

Every page gets an automatic safety check before it’s read aloud. A page flagged as serious is written again. If it still doesn’t pass, or can’t be checked, it’s never read aloud: the story stops there, and the app gives its minutes back (usually by itself; if not, email us and we’ll put them back). Pages that come out too short or cut off are written again.

No chat. Your child can’t type to it or talk with it. If you turn on questions, they just tap an answer.

Accounts are for grown-ups, and children never sign up. When we open, you’ll confirm you’re 18 or older when you set up your account.

No person reads each story before it’s heard, which is why we suggest listening along at first.

Your child’s first name goes only into their story. Our story engine and the trusted partners that power it use it to write, check and read the story aloud, and for nothing else. They never get your email or payment details. There are no ads, and we never sell your information. Our Privacy Policy lists every partner.

Questions parents and grandparents ask

Is this written by AI?

Yes, and we’d rather say so plainly. The Spark story engine is AI: it writes each story, and a computer voice reads it aloud. But it doesn’t just dash one off. Each story is planned first, then written one page at a time for your child’s exact age, and every page gets a safety check before it’s read aloud. You choose everything that goes in.

Is it safe for my child or grandchild?

The name you type is checked for anything unkind, scary or not meant for children. Our story engine follows strict child-safety rules, and every page gets an automatic safety check before it’s read aloud. There’s no chat, so your child can’t talk to it. No automatic check is perfect and no person reads each story first, so we suggest listening along the first few times.

Is it hard to use?

No. You answer a few easy questions (who it’s for, what kind of story, who reads it, and how long), then press one big “Make the story” button. It has big buttons, plain words, a Back button on every step and four text sizes, and it reads itself aloud. If you get stuck, email chris@aetheryield.com and a real person will help.

Are the storytellers real people?

No. They’re computer voices, chosen and directed to read with warmth and expression. There are 8 of them, 4 women’s voices and 4 men’s. Tap “Hear it” to listen before you choose, and you can slow any voice down.

What do you do with my child’s name?

We ask only for a first name and age, to put in the story. Our story engine and the trusted partners that power it use the name only to write, check and read the story aloud. They never get your email or payment details. There are no ads, and we never sell your information. Stories stay in My Stories for 30 days; after that, they’re no longer available.

Does it replace me reading at bedtime?

No, and it shouldn’t. It’s made to enjoy together: snuggle up and listen. It also helps on nights you’re worn out, traveling, or far away.

Several children or grandchildren? Do I need more memberships?

No. Each time you make a story, you type whichever child’s name and age you like, so one membership’s minutes can be shared among all of them. If two children will listen together, pick the younger one’s age so both can follow. Making lots of stories? Spark Family has 3 hours a month.

What does it cost, and how do I stop?

Joining the waitlist is free, with no card. When we open, Spark Monthly is $9.99 a month for 2 hours (120 minutes) of brand-new stories, and Spark Family is $14.99 a month for 3 hours. Minutes you don’t use carry over to the next month, up to one month’s worth, and listening again is free. To stop, cancel online any time with “Manage membership” in the app, or email chris@aetheryield.com and we’ll cancel it, with no phone calls and no questions asked.

What’s a waitlist, and when can I start?

We’re not open yet, and we don’t have a date to share yet. Leave your email and we’ll write to you when you can start. It takes just your email, with no card and no password.

More questions
Does my child talk to it or type into it?

No. A grown-up sets up the story and your child listens. If you turn on questions, they just tap an answer.

Does it work in Spanish?

Yes. Stories can be written and read aloud in Spanish or English, and the whole app switches to Español with one tap. You can also flip the words on the screen to the other language.

How long are the stories?

You choose Short, Medium or Long. Depending on your child’s age, that’s about 5 minutes for a short story at age 6, up to about 30 minutes for a long story at age 11. The app shows the minutes before you start.

How quickly is a story ready?

The first page comes first, and the rest keeps arriving while you listen, so you don’t wait for the whole story.

Do I need to download anything?

No. It’s a website: go to luminaraspark.com on any phone, tablet or computer. On an iPhone or iPad, use Safari. Tip: tap the Share button, then “Add to Home Screen”, and it gets its own icon, like an app.

Isn’t this just more screen time?

It’s mostly listening. The story reads itself aloud, so dim the screen and let them lie back with their eyes closed. Only Magic Quest, Secret Agent, Into the Wild and Race Against Time can have short movie scenes; pick another kind if you’d rather have none. When the story ends, nothing new starts by itself.
